Common Wins Award: I Have to Do More
The intersection of art, activism, and commerce found a vibrant stage recently as artist and social activist Common was honored with the inaugural Artist Impact Award from SAG-AFTRA and SoundExchange.
The presentation took place on Thursday afternoon at The Luckman Club/Soho West Hollywood, recognizing an artist whose work has profoundly shaped culture, expanded artistic possibilities, and inspired new forms of storytelling across music, film, and media.
The award itself is a testament to the powerful partnership between SAG-AFTRA and SoundExchange, two organizations united by a shared mission: ensuring that all creators receive appropriate compensation and respect within the current economic landscape.
At the heart of this collaboration is a significant agreement that ensures non-featured performers, including background singers and session musicians, receive royalties when their work is used on digital platforms. SoundExchange distributes 5% of its annual collections—roughly $50 million—to SAG-AFTRA to uphold this commitment.
This shared mission is beautifully exemplified by artists who refuse to stay confined to a single lane. Common, recognized as a musician, storyteller, actor, author, producer, and entrepreneur, serves as a perfect embodiment of this cross-disciplinary movement.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the SAG-AFTRA national executive director and chief negotiator, emphasized the importance of this collaboration. He noted that the partnership demonstrates a commitment to celebrating artists who transcend traditional boundaries.
“When we acknowledge artists for crossing these divides, it helps encourage other artists to do the same, and it encourages our society to do it more,” Crabtree-Ireland stated. He believes that recognizing this diverse talent is crucial for the future of the creative economy.
Common reflected on the meaning of the recognition, framing it not just as an accolade, but as a call to action. He expressed a desire to use his platform to elevate others, noting that the award fuels a commitment to continue pushing creative boundaries.
“I feel grateful that we get to put a light on the fact that what SAG-AFTRA and SoundExchange do is great for artists,” Common said. “This award makes me feel like I’ve got to do more.”
Beyond the recognition, the event also marked a launch for Common’s latest entrepreneurial venture. He introduced Jeffery Park, a limited-edition wine brand created in partnership with Argentine winemaker Karim Mussi and Gopuff. Named after a neighborhood park near his childhood home on Chicago’s South Side, the brand debuts with a 2024 pinot noir, built on the premise of togetherness, joy, and sharing good times.
