Collins McCartney feud reignited over ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’
The long-standing, storied rivalry between music legends Phil Collins and Paul McCartney seems to have found a new, playful chapter, reignited by a recent comment that suggests old wounds may still linger beneath the surface.
The tension between the drummer and the bassist dates back over two decades, rooted in a seemingly minor interaction at Buckingham Palace. Collins recalled an encounter with McCartney and his then-wife, Heather Mills, where a comment allegedly slipped out that left a lasting impression.
Collins recounted the moment, explaining that he had asked McCartney and his companions to sign a first edition of The Beatles by Hunter Davies. When he asked, “Hey Paul, do you mind signing this for me?”, Collins shared that McCartney responded with a line that stuck with him. Collins described the feeling as a subtle dismissal, suggesting a sense of being made aware of the hierarchy of fame.
“He has this thing when he’s talking to you, where he makes you feel like, ‘I know this must be hard for you because I’m a Beatle. I’m Paul McCartney and it must be very hard for you to actually be holding a conversation with me,’” Collins mused.
While the two artists reportedly managed to put their differences aside over time, the historical dynamic occasionally resurfaced. This is perhaps best illustrated by a recent observation regarding the celebrated The Beatles Anthology documentary.
Speaking recently about the documentary, Collins noted that he had been featured, and a reference concerning him was present in the original 1995 cut. However, he observed that this mention had since been removed from the footage. He posited that this removal might have been tied to McCartney’s own feelings regarding the historical context.
Collins wryly suggested that the absence of the reference might be a subtle nod to their historical friction, adding, “I thought, ‘The Beatles mentioned my name.’ I went back to watch it recently and they’d taken it out. It’s not there anymore… I don’t know, maybe McCartney didn’t like it.”
This lighthearted reflection has added a new layer to the history of their relationship. Meanwhile, Paul McCartney has continued to be in the public eye, recently sharing updates about his artistic endeavors, including his new album The Boys of Dungeon Lane and the film adaptation of his children’s book, High In The Clouds, which has left him feeling “blown away” by the work of Celine Dion.
As McCartney continues to chart his path, he has also released new music and received various accolades, reflecting a vibrant, ongoing career in the music world.
