Chvrches’ tender single Overthinker

Chvrches have released a new single, ‘Overthinker’, which dives deep into the complexities of internal relationships, pairing introspective songwriting with a recent, intimate live performance that felt as honest as the music itself.

The release comes as the group prepares for the arrival of their fifth studio album, ‘All The King’s Men’, set to drop on January 22. This new track is the latest offering from the group’s material, following the earlier release of ‘Roses’ with Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook, and Martin Doherty.

‘Overthinker’ marks a notable shift in thematic focus for the band, moving away from broad societal pressures to navigate the tangled, often contradictory dynamics of family life and intimate relationships. The lyrics explore the push and pull of connection, capturing the essence of a bond that is both a haven and a storm.

“Should I lie to you? Keep my thoughts from you?” The song captures the exquisite tension of a relationship where the partner is simultaneously “your shelter and your storm.”

The anticipation for the album has been built through intense creative periods, with the writing of ‘All The King’s Men’ taking place over multiple three-week stints in Glasgow, allowing the band to fully explore the rich culture and history of Britain and Scotland.

The new single arrived with a powerful live debut at an intimate charity show at Assumption Studios in Glasgow. The venue, a converted church where some of the album was recorded, hosted just 100 fans, creating an atmosphere of profound closeness.

During this exclusive gig, the performance offered a fresh look at the upcoming album, featuring eight new songs alongside previous tracks. The show was further elevated by the unexpected appearance of Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro, who joined Chvrches for two unreleased tracks, including ‘Jamie’s Prayer’ and ‘Faith In Flying’, alongside a performance of ‘Machines’.

The live set showcased the band’s versatility, blending the newly released material with deep cuts, demonstrating a knack for weaving intricate musical narratives. This experience has only fueled excitement for the full release.

Beyond the immediate project, Chvrches continue to explore diverse creative avenues. The group’s co-writers, Martin Doherty and Jonny Scott, have also launched collaborative projects like The Leaving, and work with others such as Sons & Daughters on Protection, showcasing a willingness to push boundaries in their artistic output.

The forthcoming album, ‘All The King’s Men’, will embark on a major global journey, confirmed to tour across the UK, Ireland, and North America. Fans can expect to see the band hit major stops, including Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago, and Los Angeles, beginning in February.
