Celebrating Neil Peart Documentary Premiere at TIFF 2026
As the music world gears up for a poignant celebration, a major tribute to one of rock’s most iconic figures is set to unfold on screen. Late Rush drummer Neil Peart is slated to be the subject of a new CBC documentary this fall, and the high-profile project has secured a world premiere slot at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The film, titled Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple, promises to be an exhilarating and deeply poignant look at the life of the legendary musician. The concept is a collaborative effort led by Rush co-founders Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, who have brought together four revered drummers—Stewart Copeland, Danny Carey, Chad Smith, and Gavin Harrison—to commemorate Peart’s legacy.
Beyond the musical homage, the documentary delves into the personal history of a figure who lived a complex life. It will feature archival footage that explores deeply personal aspects of Peart’s journey, including a sensitive exploration of how he navigated profound loss, specifically the heartbreak of losing his daughter and wife during the 1990s.
The production is helmed by filmmakers Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn, who also co-own the production company Banger Films. Their previous work on Beyond the Lighted Stage set a strong foundation for this emotional visual journey.
The documentary’s run at the Toronto International Film Festival signals an exciting expansion in the festival’s programming, which recently added eleven more films to reach a total of 293 entries for 2026. This selection underscores the growing appetite for biographical and historical narratives that connect art with personal experience.
Viewers will have access to the film on September 16th with its world premiere, followed by a public screening on September 19th. Later, the documentary will air on the CBC as part of the ongoing series The Passionate Eye on September 23rd.
