Carianne Marshall leaves Warner Chappell role after seven years

The music industry landscape is constantly evolving, and as a major player like Warner Music Group fine-tunes its leadership, significant shifts occur. Most recently, Warner Music Group announced that Carianne Marshall, the co-chair and COO of the publishing arm Warner Chappell, will be transitioning out of her role at the end of the month as the company streamlines its leadership structure.

This transition marks the end of a remarkable seven-year tenure, but it also highlights the substantial impact Marshall has had on the direction and culture of the publishing house. While Marshall departs, the plan ensures a seamless handover, with her remaining with the company through the end of the calendar year to guarantee continuity.

Marshall’s arrival in June 2018 was a strategic move, bringing with her a sharp focus and an independent, songwriter-first perspective to the major music publisher. Before joining Warner Chappell, she had built a successful track record at the popular independent music publisher SONGS, developing deep expertise in synchronization licensing and embracing the unique mindset of indie creators.

Upon joining Warner Chappell, Marshall immediately brought a vision that reshaped how the company operated. She championed the creation of a new Creative Services department, designed to provide commercial and creative opportunities for Warner Chappell writers, fundamentally rethinking what a publisher offers songwriters in the modern age.

Her leadership style complemented the strategic vision of her co-chair, Guy Moot, a British A&R executive from Sony who took the helm as CEO and co-chair. Together, Marshall and Moot formed a formidable leadership duo, blending Marshall’s expertise in licensing and creative development with Moot’s creative acumen, establishing an operating foundation that distinguished Warner Chappell.

Both Marshall and Moot reflected on their partnership, emphasizing the shared goal of building a songwriter-focused home for the creative community. They expressed immense pride in the growth and the incredible culture they fostered, noting that their collaboration created a team that was uniquely positioned for future success.

WMG CEO Robert Kyncl acknowledged Marshall’s instrumental role, noting that her dedication and impact have helped drive exceptional results that have positioned songwriters and the business for long-lasting success. The talented team she helped build will continue to build upon the strong foundation she established.
