Byrne expands ‘Who Is The Sky?’ adding two new songs
When the digital world often favors fleeting streams and endless downloads, some artists cling to the solidity of the album. David Byrne, the iconic frontman of Talking Heads, has recently celebrated that enduring philosophy with an expanded edition of his work, offering fans a deeper look at his latest offering, Who Is The Sky?.
Marking the one-year anniversary of the album’s release, Byrne unveiled the expanded version, which brings four bonus tracks to the collection, including the new single My Madness, alongside previous singles like ¿Cuál Es La Razón?
This expanded release isn’t just a matter of adding new music; it’s a reflection on how we consume art in the modern era. Byrne took the opportunity to muse on the very definition of an album in a world defined by digital ephemera.
“What’s an album? Good question,” Byrne reflected. “Vinyl fans and crate diggers have a sense of an album as a fixed thing—a set of songs on a physical object in a specific order that presumably the artist thinks makes for a cohesive listening experience.”
He noted that the rise of streaming and downloads had fundamentally altered this perception. “But streaming and downloads turned all that on its head,” he explained. “Albums can be super long, super short, and the songs can change over time. The only consistent thing might be that the songs were composed and recorded around a similar time—so they speak to that time and place, and have some sort of sonic continuity.”
To enhance this sense of continuity, Byrne added material that fleshes out the original concept. The expanded edition includes two songs that were previously cut, intended to give the initial album a richer variety of grooves and subjects. Among these additions is the highly personal track My Madness, a piece where the singer imagines their “madness” as a separate entity they come to love, understand, and respect—a testament to reconciliation.
The expanded collection also incorporates other thematic elements, such as a song featuring images of statements found on T-shirts, and a wonderful re-imagining of a track co-written and sung by Natalia Lafoucade, which explored the idea of What is The Reasons for It.
Beyond musical reflections, Byrne is channeling his philosophical interests into a new literary venture. He is set to release his new book, Sleeping Beauties, on October 8th. Published by Penguin Random House, the book delves into profound questions about why certain ideas are considered ahead of their time, and how they eventually move back into the spotlight when the world is ready for them.
