Bob Dylan and guests at Massey Hall

Fifty years ago, the air crackled with a unique kind of magic. It was the year the legendary The Band put on their unforgettable farewell show, The Last Waltz, cementing themselves in rock history. Now, as that iconic moment approaches its golden anniversary, Toronto is gearing up for a massive celebration that promises to bring the echoes of that history back to the stage.

Mark your calendars for November 25th, when the history of rock and Canadian music converges at Massey Hall for LW50: A Celebration of Bob Dylan and The Band. This isn’t just a tribute; it’s a sprawling, soulful reunion of artists who have shaped the sound of modern music, all centered around the revolutionary collaborations between Bob Dylan and The Band.

The lineup for this landmark event is a veritable feast of Canadian talent. Musicians such as the Weather Station, Born Ruffians, Basia Bulat, Jeremie Albino, Kaia Kater, Joel Plaskett, Whitehorse, Georgia Harmer, Jerry Leger, Danny Michel, Ariel Posen, Wyatt C. Louis, Justin Rutledge, Thunder Queens, Burner, Dave Bruzza (Greensky Bluegrass), the East Pointers, Tom and Thompson Wilson, and members of July Talk and Great Lake Swimmers will join the stage. The roster is stacked, offering a diverse tapestry of sounds that perfectly reflect the rich musical heritage being honored.

Adding to the evening’s atmosphere, Aaron Goldstein will once again oversee the house band, featuring the vibrant Northern Soul Horns. The performance will weave through the history of Dylan’s electric transformation, moving from the raw energy of The Basement Tapes all the way to the enduring masterpiece of The Last Waltz.

The significance of this gathering cannot be overstated. As one executive producer noted, the meeting between Bob Dylan and The Hawks in 1965 near Massey Hall remains a pivotal moment in rock history—a truly Canadian landmark. This celebration honors not just a concert, but the collaborative spirit and musical legacy that defined an era.

Beyond the music, the event has a profound charitable purpose. All net proceeds generated from LW50 will be donated to the music education charity MusiCounts, helping to fund vital school music programs across the country. It’s a perfect blend of historical reverence and community giving.
