Blue Rodeo Fans Scream “Lake Ontario” at Toronto Protest

This past Saturday, Canadian rock band Blue Rodeo delivered one such performance, taking center stage at the RBC Amphitheatre, a venue perched right on the beautiful waterfront of Lake Ontario. As part of their annual Toronto summer show, the band performed classics, including their 1993 hit, “Hasn’t Hit Me Yet,” a song that inherently touches upon the waters they share. During the performance, lead singer Greg Keelor paused to address the audience, using the platform to reflect on the controversy surrounding the lake’s name.
Keelor pointed out that a line in the song mentioned a specific lake, acknowledging its presence right there behind the venue. He asked the audience to sing with “full authority and ownership,” reminding everyone that they were celebrating the “shining waters that have been there long before any of us were ever here.”
The response resonated instantly. The audience, fully embracing the message of historical ownership, obliged, and screens at the venue displayed a map of Lake Ontario bearing its original name. The moment was powerful, emphasizing a deep sense of identity that transcended temporary political disputes.
After the performance, the band’s commitment to this sentiment was clear. Jim Cuddy summed up the feeling, telling the crowd, “That was chilling, folks. We are who we are, right? Fuck them.” This raw, authentic reaction underscored how deeply the band felt connected to the land and the people who call it home.
The energy from that night clearly fueled the band’s plans for the future. Blue Rodeo has announced several exciting new dates, adding three fresh Ontario shows to their 2026 touring schedule. Fans can now look forward to performances in Bala this October and Niagara Falls in December, extending the tour across the region.
