There is a specific kind of regret that hits you when you realize you let something truly iconic slip through your fingers. For actor Billy Crystal, that regret centers on a beloved animated masterpiece: the chance to voice Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story.

While Crystal went on to lend his voice to iconic roles, such as Mike Wazowski in Monsters Inc, the path to voicing the interstellar space ranger felt tantalizingly close. But when the opportunity arose to star in the groundbreaking CGI animated feature, Crystal chose to pass, a decision he now admits he deeply regrets.

It’s a classic conundrum in the world of acting: using the same voice for multiple leading characters in family-friendly movies. While the idea of casting the same actor as both Buzz Lightyear and another major character might seem like a clever move, Crystal ultimately missed out on a chance to be part of history.

The magic of Toy Story lies in its sheer originality. It was a monumental achievement, becoming the first feature film animated entirely with CGI. For Crystal, the decision to decline the role was rooted in a lack of understanding about the depth of the project, particularly since the character of Buzz hadn’t been fully developed yet.

When he did eventually see the project, Crystal recalls the moment of inspiration. He was shown a pencil test featuring Buzz singing a song, along with an introduction to the revolutionary new form of animation. Though the concept was hilarious, he felt he wasn’t the right fit. He felt Tim Allen possessed a more resonant voice for the role, and Mike Wazowski was a better match for his own comedic talents.

Years later, the true scope of Crystal’s missed opportunity became painfully clear. The Toy Story franchise has become an absolute juggernaut, generating over $4 billion in box office and massive revenue across merchandise, video games, and home video. By 2026, Disney estimated the brand would be worth over $16 billion. To think that Crystal missed out on a chance to be part of a property of such enormous, timeless value is truly staggering.

Despite the enormous financial success of the franchise, Crystal remains distraught that he let such an iconic moment pass him by. It is a poignant reminder that sometimes, the greatest opportunities are those we hesitate to seize, and the legacy of a film can grow far beyond the roles within it.
