Billie Joe Armstrong unveils limited edition guitar and amp

Rock icons are always ready to give back, and recently, Green Day’s frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has delivered a serious dose of gear glamour, announcing a limited-edition line of instruments and amplifiers.

Armstrong has teamed up with Epiphone and Marshall to release special editions celebrating his musical journey. The centerpiece is the Radiant Red Epiphone Les Paul Junior, a stripped-back guitar model that echoes the raw essence of punk rock. Built around a straightforward aesthetic—just one pickup, two controls, and no distractions—the guitar features a single-cutaway mahogany body and a substantial ’50s Vintage profile neck with a rosewood fretboard.

Epiphone has crafted this instrument to fit Armstrong’s minimalist approach, featuring a single Epiphone P-90 PRO pickup and master volume and tone controls. The guitar is finished in a striking red, complete with a custom black hardshell case that features an eye-catching leopard-print interior.

The partnership didn’t stop at the guitar. Armstrong also secured his first Artist Signature amplifier from Marshall, launching a special 1959BJA model. This amp is a tribute to the history of rock tone and features a custom “Dookie Mod,” inspired by the distinctive tone Armstrong developed with producer Rob Cavallo while creating their breakthrough album in 1994.

The Marshall amplifier design itself pays homage to Armstrong’s first guitar, “Blue,” incorporating baby-blue panel details alongside brass and silver accents, and proudly displays his signature on both the front and rear panels. As Armstrong shared his excitement over the collaboration, he emphasized the deep connection between music and equipment, stating that these amps have been integral to his musical life.

Beyond the gear announcement, Green Day remains active in their creative endeavors. The band recently released the soundtrack for their upcoming coming-of-age comedy, Nimrods, set for release on July 31st. The collection features career-spanning favorites and four previously unreleased live recordings.

The connection between Armstrong and the wider music community continues through collaborations. He has recently performed with his cover band The Coverups, featuring high-profile guests like Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson for a rendition of David Bowie’s ‘All The Young Dudes,’ and covering Nirvana’s ‘Drain You’ in tribute to late bassist Jennifer Finch.

This creative energy is reflected in their latest work. Their 2024 album, Saviors, was praised by critics for being their “best work since ‘American Idiot’,” showcasing the band’s ability to blend their signature sound with a renewed sense of purpose.
