Billie Joe Armstrong crashes Comic-Con with ‘Basket Case’ ice cream truck show

The road to stardom often involves a dash of chaos, but sometimes the most memorable moments happen when a rock legend decides to ditch the stage for a sweeter spectacle. That’s exactly what happened on Friday, July 24th, when Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong delivered a surprise performance that turned a San Diego Comic-Con into an ice cream truck concert.

As attendees gathered outside Petco Park, Armstrong gave fans the treat of performing their Grammy-nominated 1994 single, Basket Case. Instead of a traditional stage, he found his platform atop a Mister Freezie’s ice cream truck, strumming an acoustic guitar while promoting the group’s upcoming coming-of-age rock road trip comedy, Nimrods.

The impromptu set was pure energy. Soon, Armstrong was joined by bandmates drummer Tré Cool and bassist Mike Dirnt, who piled into the truck, emblazoned with the film’s title, to hand out T-shirts, cassettes, and ice cream to the thousands of fans who had gathered for the special event.

This unexpected celebration perfectly captured the spirit of the road trip theme that lies at the heart of the film. The movie centers on the fictional group known as the Analog Dogs (starring Liam Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust) as they embark on a wild journey across the country, convinced they’ve scored an opening gig for their favorite band.

The excitement reached new heights when several stars from the film made an appearance, including The Office veteran Jenna Fischer, Mason Thames, director/writer Lee Kirk, and other celebrated faces. The cast also includes Mckenna Grace of Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, comedian Fred Armisen, and others who bring their own flair to the cinematic adventure.

Nimrods is more than just a movie; it’s a collaborative effort that began as a co-production with Green Day. It originally premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival under the title New Year’s Rev. The feature film is set to open in the U.S. on August 14th, promising viewers an unforgettable journey.

The accompanying soundtrack further enhances the experience, featuring twenty-two Green Day classics alongside new material, including their track “I’m Never Gonna R.I.P,” and fresh tunes from various collaborators like Ultra Q and McKenna Grace, all weaving together the narrative of a legendary rock band and an epic cross-country adventure.
