Billie Eilish and Phoebe Bridgers in My Chemical Romance film
In a celebration of enduring legacy and surreal storytelling, My Chemical Romance has unveiled their latest animated short film, Prelude To The End, a project brimming with emotional depth and stellar vocal talent.
This new cinematic venture marks a full-circle moment for visual artist Lauren Tsai, who has long been celebrated for her animated work set to the band’s music. The film was developed in collaboration with Tsai and produced by her independent studio, UNREAL INC., combining the visual world of her acclaimed film The Dying World with the essence of the album’s opening track, ‘The End’.
The nine-minute film plunges viewers into a uniquely surreal narrative. It follows Astrid, a student at a mysterious New England boarding school overrun by refuse. When the school authorities discard her cherished sketchbook, Astrid is swept into a bizarre, forgotten world populated by ideas and forgotten concepts, embarking on an unexpected adventure.
The voices guiding this journey are among some of modern music’s most compelling artists. Billie Eilish lends her voice to Astrid’s friend, while Phoebe Bridgers portrays her sister. The cast is further enhanced by Japanese video game designer Hideo Kojima, who voices the enigmatic character of The Teacher, and Scrubs actor John C. McGinley, who brings gravitas as The Dean.
Beyond the central story, the film serves as a powerful tribute to the landmark 20th anniversary of My Chemical Romance’s 2006 album, The Black Parade. It is a visual reflection of the album’s theatrical ambition and enduring legacy.
The connections between the creators and the artists are rich. Tsai, who grew up creating animated fan videos to the band’s music, expressed deep respect for Gerard Way’s creative legacy, noting that he drew inspiration from her own work. This history of artistic synergy extends to other collaborators, such as Tsai’s past work with Phoebe Bridgers, including directing the animated music video for Boygenius’ ‘Cool About It’. Bridgers herself is a longtime admirer of MCR, having famously covered ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’ alongside Sloppy Jane at SXSW in 2022.
The release of Prelude To The End coincides with a major phase for MCR, as the band prepares to conclude their ‘Long Live The Black Parade’ anniversary tour with final performances at the Hollywood Bowl tonight and tomorrow. This presentation of the short film offers a fitting prelude to the epic scale of their live celebrations.
