Bernie Sanders and AOC introduce The Strokes at NYC show

When Rock Meets Revolution: Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez Introduce The Strokes

Last night in New York City, the city hosted more than just a concert; it became a stage for a surprising collision of musical history and political activism. Indie titans The Strokes shared a massive hometown show, but the evening took an unexpected turn when Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stepped onto the stage to introduce the band.

The concert, held at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, was a vibrant mix, featuring not only The Strokes but also other acclaimed acts like Beach House, TV On The Radio, and Fcukers, setting a mood that was both musically rich and socially charged.

Before The Strokes took center stage, Representative Ocasio-Cortez took the floor, declaring that the greatest city in the world was now welcoming the greatest rock band of their generation. She then brought out Senator Sanders, who offered a powerful endorsement.

Sanders praised the band for their commitment to causes that resonate deeply with his own values, highlighting their fight for economic justice, opposition to racism, and understanding that healthcare is fundamentally a human right. He also used the platform to urge the audience to engage in the upcoming elections, emphasizing the importance of voting and standing against authoritarianism.

This moment felt like a natural extension of a long-standing relationship. The Strokes and Senator Sanders have shared a history rooted in political activism, dating back to 2020 when the band headlined a ‘Get Out The Vote’ rally for Sanders’ presidential campaign.

The connection between the band and progressive politics is not new. Frontman Julian Casablancas had previously described Sanders as a “dedicated, diligent, & trustworthy patriot – and fellow native New Yorker,” noting the band’s support for his efforts to challenge corporate influence in U.S. politics.

The event also wrapped up the promotional cycle for The Strokes’ recently released album, Reality Awaits. The record, which arrived in July, received a four-star review on NME, noting that allowing the band to pursue unexpected creative directions paid off, proving that letting bands go in surprising directions can be a major success.

Following the concert, The Strokes announced their upcoming tour, which includes a highly anticipated run of the Reality Awaits album across the UK, bringing their sound to new audiences.
