Ben Gillies launches new band The Kiln with Grammy producer
A new sonic chapter is brewing, marrying the raw energy of rock history with cutting-edge production. Drummer Ben Gillies is teaming up with multi-instrumentalist and Grammy-winning producer Joseph Prielozny to launch their joint venture, The Kiln, with a self-titled debut album slated for release in 2027.
This exciting collaboration wasn’t just about making music; it was also about giving back. Gillies announced the project alongside an auction benefitting Support Act, an Australian charity dedicated to providing crisis relief and mental health support to musicians and crew. It was a perfect blend of creative ambition and compassion, kicking off the journey with a heartfelt gesture that underscored the importance of community.
The foundation of The Kiln is built on a fascinating contrast. Gillies emerged from the celebrated world of Silverchair, having been a core member of the band that achieved massive success with hits like “Frogstomp” and “Tomorrow,” and numerous ARIA Awards. Prielozny brings a pedigree steeped in excellence, having earned multiple Grammy awards for his engineering and songwriting across genres.
While their backgrounds are delightfully disparate, the resulting musical vision promises something deeply resonant. The Kiln’s sound is framed around thoughtful songwriting, artistic experimentation, and powerful storytelling, with the debut album set to explore the complex human tension between holding on and letting go.
The anticipation surrounding the music is already tangible, especially given the limited release strategy. The first vinyl run of the album will be strictly limited to 250 copies, emphasizing exclusivity and the importance of owning a piece of the creation.
Before production even began, four test pressings were made, and both Gillies and Prielozny are keeping their own copies. Adding to the excitement, a third, signed pressing is up for auction, with half the winning bid going directly to Support Act, ensuring that the creative success directly fuels vital charitable work.
For those who appreciate a unique musical journey, The Kiln represents a powerful convergence of established talent and fresh creative energy, promising a debut that is as compelling musically as it is meaningful.
