Barry Manilow walks off stage for bronchitis and cancels shows

The glittering lights of Las Vegas were meant to welcome a triumphant return for music legend Barry Manilow, but the show was abruptly curtailed. After an anticipated welcome-back concert on Thursday, the 83-year-old artist had to cut short his residency, canceling subsequent performances due to a bout of bronchitis.

The mood was set for a successful opening night at the International Theater at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. However, the festive atmosphere was quickly overshadowed when Manilow stopped playing after just two songs, reportedly asking the audience to “Talk amongst yourselves,” and refused to continue the evening.

The cancellation swept through the schedule. Following the initial performance, the show was halted, and the subsequent concert scheduled for Saturday was entirely called off. This unexpected pause underscored the physical toll that recent health issues have taken on the celebrated musician.

The reason behind the sudden exit is deeply personal. Manilow recently disclosed that he had been battling health challenges, including a diagnosis of early-stage lung cancer, which required surgery. These health struggles, particularly a recent bout of bronchitis, unfortunately led to the postponement of his Westgate residency, which had been slated to begin in February.

Despite the interruptions, Manilow’s legacy remains monumental. One of the most successful recording artists of all time, he has sold more than 85 million records worldwide. His catalog is filled with enduring classics, including chart-toppers like “Mandy,” “I Write the Songs,” and timeless adult-contemporary hits such as “Copacabana (At the Copa).”

Manilow has cemented his status as an iconic presence in Las Vegas, setting a benchmark for residency success. His tally of shows at the Westgate venue has surpassed even Elvis Presley’s record, establishing him as one of the most enduring headliners in the city.
