Barry Keoghan returns for new Top Boy spin-offs
The world of Top Boy has carved out a lasting niche on streaming platforms, proving that a gripping crime drama can offer more than just narrative tension—it can deliver a cultural phenomenon. Now, the franchise is expanding, promising fans an even deeper dive into the complex lives and underworlds of its characters through two exciting new spin-off series.
Acclaimed creator Barry Keoghan is set to return to the role of Jonny McGee for these new ventures, joining Jasmine Jobson in fresh roles across the expanded universe. These forthcoming projects, Jonny Boy and Jaq, were officially unveiled as part of Netflix’s new slate of UK commissions at the Edinburgh TV Festival.
Jonny Boy will serve as a five-part prequel, offering a look behind the curtain of Jonny McGee’s life. It will trace the history of the violent Irish gangster, exploring his complex relationships and conflicts within the criminal landscape.
The story of Jonny McGee delves into the brutal world of organized crime, focusing on his relationship with his family and his conflicts with rivals, including the powerful Irish gang member Tadgh and the formidable Sully.
The narrative is penned by the original creator, Ronan Bennett, and is set to be directed by filmmakers Holy Spider and Border, promising a visually and emotionally rich exploration of the themes established in the original series.
Parallel to this prequel is the six-part series, Jaq, which follows Jacqueline ‘Jaq’ Lawrence as she navigates life beyond the confines of Summerhouse. This exploration focuses on the character’s journey and evolution, bringing new depth to the established story.
Jaq is a collaboration between playwright Ryan Calais Cameron and Jasmine Jobson, who also serves as an executive producer. Jobson’s strong performance in the original series earned her recognition, including the Best Supporting Actress prize at the 2024 BAFTA TV Awards.
