Artists sell music directly and keep revenue on SoundCloud

Music streaming has revolutionized how we discover and consume sound, but for many independent artists, the journey from audience appreciation to direct commerce often remains fragmented. Now, SoundCloud is taking a bold step to unify this experience, allowing creators to transform listeners into direct customers by enabling direct music sales.

This innovative feature, which allows artists to sell downloadable tracks directly from their profiles without paying the platform a commission, launched in a Beta phase on August 26. It is designed to bridge the traditional gap between music discovery and commerce, keeping the entire fan experience consolidated within the SoundCloud ecosystem.

How does this work? Participating artists gain the power to set their own prices and select which eligible tracks are available for purchase. They can offer downloads in high-quality formats like MP3 and WAV. SoundCloud ensures artists receive the full purchase price, only deducting standard payment-processing fees and applicable taxes.

This move addresses a long-standing challenge for musicians who have successfully built communities on streaming platforms. Before this update, artists often relied on external links to guide fans toward purchasing music, scattering the revenue stream and diluting the connection between the creator and their audience.

SoundCloud’s vision is clear: to empower artists to build their entire career—from releasing music and promoting it to communicating with fans and earning revenue—all in one place. CEO Eliah Seton emphasizes this focus on community-driven monetization, stating that artists should be able to build their audience on a single platform and let fans directly support the music they love.

The statistics suggest that this direct purchasing model taps into genuine fan engagement. Research conducted by the company indicates that while 14% of artists already sell downloadable music, another 14% are eager to try it. Furthermore, highly engaged superfans are shown to spend up to five times more on artists and music than casual listeners.

By facilitating direct transactions, the feature transforms a simple stream into a high-value exchange. It creates a powerful opportunity for independent artists to establish a higher-value relationship with listeners who already follow their profiles and participate in their communities.

Direct sales are just one piece of a growing collection of monetization tools SoundCloud is developing. These features include Fan-Powered Royalties, Fan Support options, and integrations for on-demand vinyl and ticketing. This strategic expansion signals the platform’s ambition to become a comprehensive hub for the entire independent music career.

The initial Beta group is focused on gathering essential feedback regarding purchasing friction, artist controls, and future feature development. SoundCloud plans to gradually expand access before rolling out direct music purchases to all eligible creators later this fall, continuing to refine the experience for everyone.
