ARIA Music Festival Returns for Second Year
The music festival circuit is about to get a serious spotlight, as the Australian Recording Industry Association announced the return of the prestigious ARIA Award for Best Music Festival for a second year. This recognition is not just about big crowds and epic stages; it celebrates the vital role that festivals play in launching the careers of Australian artists and championing local talent.
The award, developed in partnership with the Australian Festival Association (AFA), seeks to honor those festivals that successfully place Australian musicians directly in front of audiences, and those programmers who thoughtfully back local talent on their lineups. Essentially, it recognizes the platforms where Australian music truly comes alive.
To be considered for the award, a festival must demonstrate a commitment to local artists. This means featuring an Australian headline act or ensuring that at least fifty percent of the artists on the lineup are Australian, in addition to holding AFA membership.
This focus on the impact of live music is clear. As ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd stated, “Festivals are where Australian artists meet the audiences that change their careers.” It underscores the powerful connection between a live experience and an artist’s professional trajectory.
The importance of this symbiotic relationship is echoed by the festival community. Adelle Robinson, chair of the AFA and leader of Australian promoter Fuzzy, described festivals as a key part of the music industry’s ecosystem. She highlighted how these events have served as essential platforms, launching many artists at the beginning of their careers, and recognized the award as a celebration of “the link between Australian music, fans and a unique live experience.”
In 2025, the inaugural award was won by the Laneway Festival, setting a high benchmark for what the category represents. The announcement brings renewed attention to the vital decisions programmers make regarding their talent and programming.
This new award cycle lands at a significant point for the ARIA. The organization will mark its 40th anniversary with the ARIA Awards ceremony on November 18, 2026. This milestone year will feature the ceremony at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion, the same venue that has hosted the event six consecutive times, celebrating four decades of Australian music.
The 2026 ceremony will look back at four decades of musical history while shining a light on current stars, presented in partnership with Spotify and broadcast on Network 10 and Paramount+. It promises to be a powerful reflection on the journey of Australian music, bridging the history of the industry with its vibrant contemporary pulse.
