Apu’s big return to The Simpsons

After a lengthy absence, a beloved figure from television is making a significant return, bringing a long-time character back to life with a fresh voice.

The return of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon to The Simpsons is happening on screen in the episode “The Revengening,” marking a notable shift for the franchise. This time, the iconic character is voiced by Sunil Malhotra, bringing a new dynamic to the familiar role.

Malhotra, known for his work in series like Grey’s Anatomy and The Legend of Korra, approached the role with a specific goal: to ensure Apu was portrayed in a way that was more culturally informed. He sought an opportunity to reclaim the character, reflecting on past portrayals and aiming to achieve a representation that felt authentic.

Adding to this evolution, Apu’s wife, Manjula, is also making her voice return to the show, voiced by Janina Gavankar. This pairing introduces new dimensions to the family dynamic central to the narrative.

The process behind this casting was handled with discretion, with Simpsons staffers keeping the details tight-lipped. To ensure a smooth transition and protect privacy, non-disclosure agreements were issued to all parties involved.

The transition from the original voice, Hank Azaria, has been a subject of public discussion. Azaria’s previous portrayal of the Indian convenience store owner was the focus of a previous documentary, which led to a public reconciliation between Azaria and journalist Hari Kondabolu.

This new iteration of Apu’s story opens an interesting chapter for fans of the show, balancing nostalgia with contemporary sensitivity. It demonstrates how long-running television can adapt and evolve, finding new ways to explore complex characters for a modern audience.
