Anne Hathaway defends Tom Cruise’s Digger from scathing reviews

In an industry often defined by sharp elbows and scathing reviews, sometimes the most polarizing films are the ones that capture the imagination of their audience. Such is the case with the satirical black comedy Digger, a project co-written and directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, known for masterpieces like Birdman and The Revenant.

Digger plunges viewers into the chaotic world of oil tycoon Digger Rockwell (Tom Cruise) as he grapples with the devastating environmental fallout he is responsible for. The premise is a high-stakes search for survival against a backdrop of ecological disaster, wrapped in a deeply provocative narrative.

Despite its ambitious vision, the film faced a significant hurdle. Critics were notoriously harsh, panning the movie and suggesting it was on track to become one of Hollywood’s biggest flops. Financially, the film struggled, grossing only $20 million against an extensive $160 million production budget.

Yet, the fate of a film is often decided not by the critics, but by the cinephiles. Movie fans who have engaged with Digger have offered a glowing counter-narrative. With a Rotten Tomatoes audience rating of 73 per cent, the film has carved out a dedicated space for itself among those willing to look beyond the initial critical noise.

One of the most enthusiastic defenders came from actress Anne Hathaway. She shared her admiration for the project, calling it a brilliant, smart, and trippy experience. Hathaway praised the film, noting that it was ambitious and funny, urging viewers to decide for themselves what they make of it, awarding it a perfect 10/10.

The praise extended beyond the screen. Other figures in the film world also championed the work. Mandy Patinkin, known for his role in Homeland, encouraged audiences to “run” and experience Digger in cinemas, arguing that its critical dismissal was “beyond comprehension.”

The discussion around Digger broadened further when Hathaway followed up with her own release, Verity. This seductive psychological thriller, adapted from a best-selling novel, followed author Verity Crawford (Hathaway) as she navigated twisted confessions about her husband and the blurred lines between fiction and reality.
