Amy Winehouse Back To Black 20th Anniversary celebration

Twenty years after Amy Winehouse redefined soul music with her sophomore effort, Back to Black is celebrating a major milestone with a definitive anniversary reissue. This celebration doesn’t just revisit the music; it digs deeper into the sessions and the era that cemented her status as an international star.

Republic/UMe will release this expanded collection on October 23rd, just four days before the October 27th anniversary of the album’s original 2006 release. The package is designed to immerse fans in the creative journey, spanning a 3LP clear-vinyl set, a 3CD edition, and a digital deluxe release. Limited-edition versions, including a special Chalkboard Marble vinyl and a webstore-exclusive Zoetrope pressing featuring moving footage of Winehouse, will further enhance the collector experience.

The centerpiece of this collection is a treasure trove of previously unreleased material. It includes four demos, rare B-sides, and a full live performance recorded at Amsterdam’s Paradiso on February 8, 2007, during the Back to Black tour. This expanded package also features previously unseen photographs by the album’s original photographers, Mischa Richter and Alex Lake, an image from producer Mark Ronson’s archive of Winehouse’s handwritten lyrics, alternative cover art, and new liner notes from Ronson and fellow producer Salaam Remi.

The journey of Back to Black was one of explosive transformation. When Amy Winehouse first emerged, she had quickly shifted from the jazz and hip-hop influences of her earlier work to embracing the sounds of the 1960s. Collaborating with producer Mark Ronson provided the perfect sonic framework, blending aggressive retro-soul with Winehouse’s deeply personal confessions. As Winehouse herself noted about the creative process, “I write songs because I’m fucked in the head and need to get something good out of something bad.”

The result was an album that captured the intimate messiness of her life and turned it into something both musically timeless and culturally seismic. Critics observed how the album managed to fuse the polished sounds of ’60s girl groups with blunt contemporary honesty, making Winehouse feel radically different from the mainstream pop surrounding her.

Two decades later, the impact of the record remains undeniable. Back to Black has sold over 25 million copies worldwide. In the U.K., the album reached No. 1 and became the best-selling album of 2007. Following her passing, the catalog’s weight only increased, with the album immediately returning to the Billboard 200 at No. 9.

Amy Winehouse’s story continues to resonate, explored through documentaries and the 2024 biopic Back to Black, which starred Marisa Abela. The enduring power of her music and her unique spirit has been honored, as producer Mark Ronson reflected on the work, stating that the six songs born from a musical fit of furious infatuation still matter deeply to so many people.
