Actual Mastodon Fossil Vinyl Marrow Deep
When a band decides to collaborate with the prehistoric world, you expect a certain level of spectacle. But when the band Mastodon decided to turn a new album into an archaeological dig, they delivered something far more wonderfully bizarre: a vinyl pressing featuring actual mastodon fossils.
The album in question is Marrow Deep, which emerged after the passing of founding guitarist-vocalist Brent Hinds. Rather than settling for conventional artwork, the band sought a material that reflected the raw, deep history of their sound. Their answer came in the form of a wild idea: using mastodon teeth.
About two decades ago, the process began when the band acquired a large collection of mastodon teeth. These weren’t just curiosities; they were raw material that left them wondering what to do with this prehistoric bounty. Troy Sanders eventually came up with the ingenious plan to turn these teeth into powder and press them directly into a vinyl record. This ambitious project was made possible through a collaboration with Loma Vista Recordings and the esteemed geology department at the University of Georgia, which helped ensure the authenticity of the process.
The resulting release, known as the Bone Dust Edition vinyl, is a true limited edition. Only 170 copies were produced, making each pressing a unique piece of geological history. The 2LP manual press even includes “bone dust” enclosed within the Marrow Deep jacket, blurring the lines between music and paleontological discovery.
For fans eager to own this unique artifact, the Bone Dust Edition is being offered via a raffle, with shipping available to the US, Canada, and Mexico. Tickets are available for $150, offering a chance to acquire this prehistoric pressing before October 12 at noon. It’s a testament to how art can transcend typical boundaries, turning ancient bones into a collectible and unforgettable piece of music history.
