Abe Laboriel Jr joins Pearl Jam at Ohana Festival

When a surprise musical reunion happens, it often feels like a lightning strike—and sometimes, it feels like pure magic. Last weekend, that kind of synergy unfolded at the Ohana Festival in California, as legendary drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. stepped onto the stage to join the formidable lineup of Pearl Jam.

The appearance was a delightful surprise. While the festival was headlined by Eddie Vedder and Friends, the show took an unexpected turn. Instead of the usual set, Vedder was joined by his bandmates for a powerhouse performance, opening with ‘Corduroy’ before launching into tracks like ‘Hail, Hail’, ‘Scared Of Fear’, ‘Wishlist’, and ‘Dark Matter’. Right there at the heart of the rhythm was Laboriel, making his debut behind the kit.

This live moment was particularly poignant, marking Pearl Jam’s first performance since drummer Matt Cameron announced his departure after 27 years with the group. While it remains unclear if Laboriel has permanently filled Cameron’s shoes, Vedder introduced him simply as someone “filling in tonight,” adding an extra layer of organic surprise to the evening.

The musical history connecting Laboriel and the Pearl Jam orbit is deep. Laboriel has shared a long history with Paul McCartney, playing alongside him since 2001, and even performing on his album Driving Rain. McCartney himself has praised Laboriel’s skill, noting the special nature of seeing him play with Ringo Starr on tracks like ‘Helter Skelter’, highlighting the unique bonds forged in the music world.

Laboriel’s experience is clearly multifaceted. He has a history with Vedder, having played drums and percussion on tracks like ‘Picture’, and contributed to Vedder’s 2022 solo album Earthling. Beyond Pearl Jam, Laboriel has collaborated with a stellar roster of artists including Sting, Eric Clapton, and Steve Winwood, showcasing a remarkable breadth of talent.

The context of this performance also touches upon the recent creative output of the band. Pearl Jam’s most recent studio effort, the album Dark Matter, released in 2024, was critically acclaimed, earning praise for its impressive musicianship and determination. The energy brought by the new rhythm behind the band suggests a powerful blend of history and future creativity.

Following the festival appearance, the band remains focused on the road, with their next performance scheduled for the following night at Ohana. This dynamic collaboration promises to inject fresh energy into Pearl Jam’s ongoing journey, continuing the legacy of musicianship and shared artistic spirit that defines the group.
