460 remaining the race is on

Camden Town is a vibrant tapestry of history and counter-culture, a place where the spirit of punk still pulses through the streets. It was amidst this energetic backdrop that a delightful, slightly surreal exchange took place over a summer weekend.

We were on a mission: to capture the essence of our new 500 to Go summer subscription campaign in some authentically Camden fashion. Our latest countdown sign needed to be immortalized, and we sought out the perfect subject—a fantastic example of old-school punk culture, radiating an undeniable charisma.

The opportunity presented itself on a Friday afternoon when we spotted him, a true embodiment of Camden’s edge, holding court in the lively atmosphere. He was charging just £2 for a simple photograph, a small fee that underscored his self-sufficient spirit—enough to grab a drink and enjoy the moment.

I saw something beyond the cost of the photo; I saw an opportunity for connection. Instead of simply paying the small fee, I offered him a much larger exchange. I proposed that he hold our latest countdown sign for us instead of posing for a picture.

The result was immediate and wonderfully unexpected. He agreed to the proposition, a testament to the shared creativity found in these spaces. In exchange for holding the promotional material, we arranged a much better deal—offering him £5 to secure his participation and hold the sign.

It was a perfect transaction, proving that sometimes the best marketing isn’t about sales pitches, but about genuine interaction. It felt like money well spent, bridging the gap between commerce and community in a way that only Camden can manage.
