2026 Vancouver Film Festival Lineup
As the lingering warmth of summer fades, a different kind of cinematic heat is about to ignite in Vancouver. The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) has officially unveiled the lineup for its 45th edition, promising a remarkable global journey spanning October 1 to 11.
This year’s festival is not just a collection of films; it is a sprawling tapestry of global stories, featuring 162 features, 91 shorts, and two episodic series representing films from 76 different nations. It’s a celebration of cinematic diversity and fearless storytelling.
The festival kicks off with a dose of sharp, witty comedy, opening the slate with Jesse Eisenberg’s latest feature, The Debut. This charming comedy brings together the talents of Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti, offering an engaging look at the world of community theatre.
As the festival winds down, it delivers a punchy, genre-bending finale. The closing night will feature Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine, a darkly humorous black comedy that casts iconic actors John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell in roles as CIA agents amidst the backdrop of the 1973 Chilean coup.
Beyond the main features, the festival dedicates significant attention to Canadian perspectives, highlighting three compelling documentary works. These include Sean Menard’s Run Terry Run, Matthew Rankin’s Ladies and Gentlemen, and the moving history captured in Brian Mulroney and Adrian Buitenhuis’s Man in Motion: The Rick Hansen Story.
VIFF also steps outside the traditional film mold with its programming dedicated to bridging the gap between cinema and music. The VIFF Amp initiative creates fascinating intersections, bringing together the film and music industries through programs featuring artists like Meg Remy of U.S. Girls, composer Peter Peter of Heated Rivalry, and Matthew Rogers of the Harpoonist & the Axe Murderer.
Adding a live musical dimension, the VIFF Live program promises an unforgettable concert experience, featuring the work of DEVO’s Mark Mothersbaugh, showcasing his mastery as a film composer.
